The Importance Of Breaking In Those New Hiking Boots
July 15, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment
A long walk in those new hiking boots before they are broken in will only have one result: extremely painful blisters. If you are hiking for a few days or more, then the blisters could become very problematic. It is therefore essential to make sure your new hiking boots are completely broken in.
Start by wearing the boots around the house while wearing the same socks that you would during hiking. This will allow you to establish if the boots definitely fit correctly; if they continually cause pain then they do not fit properly and should be returned. It is far better to discover this in the comfort of your home rather than in the limited comfort of a mountainside. From the safe beginnings of home, adventure out with your boots on errands, slowly building to small hikes. If the boot causes irritation at any stage, then take it back to the store and get a different fit; what may seem like a small problem can become much larger over an extended period of time.
The store where you purchased the boots will also be much more likely to allow you to return them if they are have only endured being worn at home, rather than suffering the wear and tear of a hike. As you wear in the boot bends and folds will appear and remain permanently, showing the boot adapting to your foot and style of walking. Once you are confident that those new hiking boots seem comfortable take them out for a more strenuous hike, carrying some additional weight to ensure that they are fully broken in. Breaking in new hiking boots is the best method of protecting against blisters but they still may occur. Now you can enjoy a great hike in the comfort of those new hiking boots!
